What is a dental crown?
A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or a dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of Your tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using a dental cement.
Why you might be needing a dental crown?
One of our dentists might recommend placing a dental crown for a wide range of reasons but, in general, most of these reasons will probably fall within one of the following basic categories:
A) To restore Your tooth to its original shape
B) To strengthen Your tooth.
C) To improve the cosmetic appearance of Your tooth.
Crowning method:
The most common method of crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of the prepared tooth. Using this indirect method of tooth restoration allows use of strong restorative materials requiring time consuming fabrication methods requiring intense heat, such as casting metal or firing porcelain which would not be possible to complete inside the mouth.
The materials used are usually porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to metal, according to the suitability for the job. This crown will then be replacing the missing tooth structure.
The patient returns to the dental surgery a week or two later and then the temporary crown is removed. The newly made permanent crown is fitted and cemented in place.
Alternatively, the most modern method is to use techniques related to CAD/CAM Dentistry. During this method, the tooth is prepared and afterwards the computer software creates a virtual restoration, which is milled there and then the precise dimensions and form. An hour or two later, this crown can be bonded permanently in place.
